The video makes the guy look like an absolute fool, but I will point out, I don't know what is happening with the bottom wrestler's right arm, but right before the guy charges the mat, you can see the ref signal a potentially dangerous hold, and I think he stops the match. That's by no way meant to say what he did was okay, but I think his motivation was to protect his son, not to lash out at a winning wrestler. Am I nuts, or does anyone else see this?

I totally agree. His best interest was definitely to protect his son. If you listened to the audio for this, the "victim's" dad said that they had stopped wrestling when this happened. I guess "Bad Dad" was just a little too late. I am sure there a lot of parents who have thought about this or who have screamed their heads off when they think their child is getting hurt. I know that I have. I am sure Bad Dad is very embarrassed not only for himself, but for his child also. No one likes to lose control like that and that is absolutely what he did. Hopefully next time he will remain in the stands! Ha! Ha!

I know I'm guilty of this myself, but this is another argument for no one but the wrestler, one or two coaches and a referee on the mat, and for dads not coaching their own sons. It's hard, because the way I've learned being a wrestling parent is to have a bunch of teammates and any friends or family at matside. I love having a 'rooting section' for a youth wrestler, but it probably makes things harder on both the coach and wrestler, and leads to situations like this.
I don't have a ton of experience with high school wrestling yet, but it seems like this is much better controlled in high school. I'll try to support and help out with my son's high school team, but it seems like dad's place at a match is clearly the bleachers.

Notice one big thing about the video. The dad never checks on the condition of his son. He runs in, throws the opponent off and then stands up pointing at the camera yelling. He then goes back to the corner as his son stands up looking at him.

Watch the video very carefully. Look for the defending wrestlers right hand. After the Dad rushes the mat, the boy's arm is released and yet remains on his back. It's not a natural position for the arm. This child could be seriouly injured. I'm not sure what the dad should have done but the ref should have touched the offensive wrestler's arm to prevent further damage. This video should raise questions not only about bad parenting but about the ref's role in keeping kids safe.

In my experience, when a young wrestler is seriously injured, he will show signs of pain and at that age, cry. Looks to me like the boy on bottom was just as surprised as the boy on top, wondering why his dad just charged the mat. He might have been in shock at the whole event. I think the vast majority of refs do a great job at keeping the athletes safe. This one certainly did, he already blew the whistle and was stopping the match. It was an over zelous father. I heard another news channel report that the bottom boy might have been wrestling with an exhisting injury. If that is the case, the real issue is why are parents letting the kids wrestle with an injury that could ruin more then just the wrestler's winning streak.

This entire situation was ridiculous. I understand being concerned over the safety of your child, however, the man had no right to put his hands on the other boy. He should have been locked up for doing what he did. It was a pathetic display. It doesn't shock me at all. Look what happened last year at our own kids states. Adults that do these types of things are sad excuses for parents. We have all been in the situation where we are concerned about the position our son is in, but I don't rush the mat and toss the other kid off. The ref seemed to be doing what he had to do. The father should be banned from attending any further events the next two years. Send a tough messege. If not, these types of things will continue to occur and kids are at risk when they do.

Speaking of the situation at last year's states, does anyone have video of that one? I know it's probably just digging for dirt, but I'd love to post that up here.

I don't think anyone caught the actual punch on video. The only video I saw was the one that made the news. It didn't have the "action" we all witnessed.

The only thing we have is the match, the beginning of the scuffle and the aftermath of the punch. Sorry

I AGREE, I THINK THE REF'S NEED TO BE HELD MORE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE SAFTEY OF THE KIDS. REMBERING THAT THEY ARE TRAINED AND PAID TO DO THIS!!!
