How's the season going so far? I know St. Polycarp is 3 - 0, and St. E's is 2 - 1. How are the other teams doing? I'd like DEWrestling to one day host dual meet results, but simply couldn't set up the technology to make that happen in time for this season. Maybe next year. I am concerned about numbers in the CYM teams this year. I would guess that on a typical CYM dual meet Sunday, there are dozens of forfeits in the different duals. I understand St. Mary Magdalene is developing a team to bring into the league, and every year you hear about some team or another that wants to join. What do some of these other teams need to help them get into the league? What teams and / or individuals have surprised you this year? St. Pete's always brings great wrestling to the mat, but it seems they are hurt badly by forfeits. Holy Angels seems to have a good number of wrestlers this year. Although I haven't seen a match of theirs yet, from what I've seen of them at tournaments, they're the next up and coming team to watch. Christ the Teacher is another up and coming team. They seem to have a great coaching staff, and have had a number of exceptionally competitive wrestlers.

Building a Successful Team

What is the formula? What are the ingredients? There are two successful teams I would look at right now, and they each have a strong JV program and they each compete in tournaments locally, regionally and more. Are these factors important? I think the JV program is absolutely VITAL, and I am encouraged that as St. Mary Magdalene develops a team to enter the league, they have started this year with a JV program first, even before entering a team into CYM dual meets. Good luck, StMM !!!

Even though the numbers in CYM were a bit down this year I thought the finals had some really good matches. Especially the upper weights. There were like three overtime matches. Merill - Draper was a battle and Zwier - Custer was great. St. Polycarp ratcheted it up in the finals though, but St. E's kept it close. Good year, several kids that go to the private clubs also were successful in CYM. Maybe more kids will do both next year. CYM has a great tradition and I would hate to see that go away.

You're right, I think the competition level in-state, including CYM, is at an all-time high, and there were many matches Sunday that were fun to just sit in the bleachers and watch, even if you didn't have a rooting interest. However, there were less than a hundred kids in the tournament. St. Polycarp and St. Elizabeth had a lot of strong wrestlers, but the team scores are as lopsided as they are only because of the numbers the other teams didn't have. Even the teams that scored relatively low placed a significant ratio of their kids in at least the semis. With bigger teams, CYM Championships would be a six - way dogfight. As it was, the biggest bracket had eight wrestlers, but the average was probably closer to five. It's been great to see the 'club kids' getting involved in local leagues - we can't blame poor CYM numbers on that anymore. St. John the Beloved and ICS didn't even field teams this year, and some of the teams that remain are hanging on out of pure commitment. The level of competition is up, but numbers are down. I still worry...
