Delaware Wrestling - An Overview

This overview of Delaware Wrestling was first published in American Adrenaline magazine (no longer in publication). Whether you are new to the mats, or an experienced wrestling family, this article explains a little bit about the community that surrounds our sport, and highlights the best in wrestling in our state.

Delaware, also known as The Diamond State, or the First State, is the second smallest state in the nation. Wrestlers anywhere in the state can reach competition anywhere else in the state with no more than a two and a half hour drive. This helps create especially strong rivalries, and especially close friendships. The fiercest in-state rivals will often wrestle each other at a number of events each year. However, when we travel out-of-state, wrestlers from many teams will often combine together for fun, friendship, support and coaching.

Delaware is proud to be the host of one of the premier annual high school wrestling events in the nation, the Beast of the East. The event draws the top high school wrestlers and teams in the nation, including Blair Academy, and teams from as far away as California. This event is scheduled to be held at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware on December 18th and 19th this year, and is sponsored by the Delaware Wrestling Alliance, a non-profit group to promote the sport of wrestling in Delaware at all levels.

Delaware Youth Wrestlers participate in tournaments in-state, and in the surrounding states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. The Scholastic Kids State Championship, sponsored by the DWA, is the culmination of many wrestlers' season, although increasing numbers now continue to the more advanced competition in regional and national competitions. Dual meets are organized weekly during the season for fifth through eighth graders by the Office of Youth Ministry, an association of private (Catholic) schools. Dual meets are also organized for younger wrestlers by the DelMarVa Elementary Wrestling League.

Youth wrestling teams are organized mainly along these lines, with (Catholic) school based teams wrestling in CYM, and teams based in towns or regions elsewhere. New to the scene are the private 'club' teams which operate instead of or sometimes as a supplement to these teams.

The club teams generally feature an accomplished head coach and more intensive coaching and development. These teams generally travel to the further, more challenging tournaments, and have thus far enjoyed a great degree of success.
