Rebuilding - The Road Map
As I mentioned on the home page, I have begun to rebuild DEWrestling. The original site was deployed using a Linux server, XML/XSL/XSLT, Movable Type and Perl. While it was a great technical challenge, this solution proved difficult to maintain and scale. This iteration is being built on ASP.NET 2.0, using SQL Server, and Community Server. This platform may not provide the technical challenge and code elegance of the original version, these are more widely supported tools, and should scale much better.
I expect this effort to take quite some time, although I hope to have much core functionality available as soon as possible. I will post updates to this category as development progresses.
There will be four major aspects to this rebuild:
- Prior functionality
- Community Server
- Mark-up / styling
- New features
Prior functionality
The most useful functionality on the original site was the tournament calendar. This feature is up and running now. Site visitors can view upcoming tournaments and add new ones to our listing. The other function on the original site was the results listing. This has not yet been ported over. Efforts on this function will be the next major task, after the initial implementation of Community Server.
Community Server
This is an ASP.NET / SQL Server knowledge management / collaboration tool produced by Telligent, working closely with Microsoft and a wide community of expert support. To support what I view as the community around DEWrestling, I wanted to provide a news tool (blog) and discussion forum that integrated well with my .NET / SQL hosting environment, and Community Server was the best. This is an exceedingly powerful tool, used by some of the biggest companies, and should work well for my purposes here. Initial implementation tasks will be to deploy Community Server's tools under the navigation, design, and look and feel of the original site.
At this time, the news tool (blog) is up. The next effort here will be the redesign of the discussion forum.
Mark-up / Styling
I believe strongly in the importance of valid, semantic code, and the separation of content and presentation. The initial site was painstakingly built to meet these standards. While the new tools used on this version will make these standards difficult, if not impossible to meet, as the other items get implemented, I will review page output extensively to come as close as possible to these goals.
New features
This item represents new ideas which the current platform and environment make possible. While the temptation to move into the alluring challenges of the tasks below is great, I will resist until the appropriate time.
- Dual meet listing
- Tournament listing usage of Google Maps
- RSS feeds (calendar)
- Better integration within Community Server (ie pictures / files)
