Injured Young Wrestler

This past weekend at the 18th Annual Schalick Bob Kinner Classic Open, I witnessed a scary sight. Shane Cawman, a third grade St. Elizabeth JV Wrestler, was wrestling in his finals match, at Bantam 65. Shane was taken to the mat, in a perfectly legal move. However, he landed on his back / head / neck, hard, along the joint between the mat and the smaller, thinner warmup mat on the side. Shane felt nausea and tingling, and the event trainer responded immediately. An ambulance was called, and this young wrestler was taken out on a back board, in a neck collar. Shane's St. Elizabeth teammates were allowed to come to the front, and they lined the path for the stretcher as Shane was taken out, clapping and expressing their support.

Shane was seen at the SJH Elmer hospital, and sent home. X-Rays and a CAT scan were negative, and Shane was diagnosed with a cervical strain, recommended to wear a neck collar, as needed, and sidelined from practice for a week (which was a snowy, cancelled week anyway).

I had thought this could be scary for a wrestler of Shane's age, but when I spoke with Shane's father, Shane apparently was excited to wrestle in States, was disappointed because he was winning the match when he was hurt, and was looking forward to the chance to wrestle this opponent again. Shane, our thoughts are with you, we hope everything is going well, and we applaud your courage.

In another story, Smyrna wrestler Zeke Sullivan was injured earlier this year at the Outlaw Duals in Virginia. I don't know the whole story, it's best read on Smyrna's site, but I wanted to at least mention Zeke. Get well soon, everyone around the mats in the state sends you their best!!!

My son's injury was a scary sight to say the least. What was comforting was the unbridled support of the St. Elizabeth's excellent coaching staff. The calming words and demeanor of Coach Blue were especially appreciated; he put Shane at ease and by the time he got home he was ready to challenge his next opponent. THANKS to everyone for all the calls and kind words; it has meant alot to Shane. See you at the States.

Mr. Cawman and Shane,

Glad to hear that things were not as bad as initially seemed. I have three sons wrestling now and a fourth next year so I know there will be health challenges sooner or later. I spoke with you at the NC Qualifiers and mentioned that Kalen was going M62 this year. Shane and Kalen wrestled at States last year. Well, best wishes and look forward to seeing Shane be a beast on the mat!!
