St. Polycarp 2007 CYM Champions

This past Sunday at the CYM Championships, the St. Polycarp CYM Wrestling Team earned their third consecutive CYM Championship. The St. Polycarp team, a part of the Smyrna Wrestling powerhouse, ruled the day, for their third year in a row. The team placed a staggering 23 wrestlers on the podium (top four) in their respective weight classes, including ten CYM Champions. The St. Elizabeth Vikings kept things close on their way to second place, until St. Polycarp was able to pull away in the finals round.

The finals round brought some great matches including Matt Kibblehouse's (StP)victory over Landon Archangelo(SPC) at 75 pounds;, a rematch of the Trey Mitchell (SPC) / Marty Coen(StE) rivalry at 85; Dan Bleacher's(StE)gutsy match against Zach Carbine(SPC) at 90; the rematch of David Hershberger(SPC)and Dakota Diksa (StE) at 110; Adam Draper (StP)and Mike Merrill (StE) at 120, decided in the third overtime period; and Alex Zwier's(CTT)decision over Jim Custer (StE) at 170. The most exciting match of the day, however, was Mike Wisnoski's (StE) last-second decision over Tim Moss in the 140 pound consolation finals. St. Elizabeth's Nick Miller suffered an ankle injury in the second period of his loss to St. Polycarp's Tyler Martin at 150. Nick left early, after his match, to have his ankle checked out medically. The early report is a severe sprain, but no break. Rest and get well, soon, Nick!!

Predictably, the day also provided a few matchups of St. Polycarp wrestlers in the finals. Their coaches handled these matches with a great deal of class, sitting silently in opposite corners. I assume they did not want to coach either for or against teammates, letting them wrestle on their own. I'm not sure, but I don't believe any of these matches resulted in pins. This could be because these wrestlers who are likely practice partners were that evenly matched, or it could be at their coaches instruction, as a show of respect.

St. Peters, Christ the Teacher, St. Edmonds and Holy Angels were well represented as well, placing a number of wrestlers in the top four in their brackets. Every team was well represented and highly competitive. The final results earned by these next four teams probably has more to do with the number of wrestlers they were able to bring to the league this year, than their relative strength. If more wrestlers can be brought to the CYM mats, the CYM Championships promise exciting action for years to come.

Note: At the time I am writing this, I do not have the exact team scores, or the order of the third through sixth place finishing teams. I will update this report when I have this information. I would ask anyone with complete team scores and results to please send it to me. I also have a number of pictures I will be posting, when I am able.
